Xterminate blog checking

Keeping up to date on blogs can get time consuming and complicated. Google Reader has been a huge help to me, so I thought I’d share! It is basically like an email inbox for blogs! So in the midst of my travels here, there, and everywhere, Google Reader will manage my blog, all the other blogs you follow and alert you everytime there is a NEW blog posting!

Simplify your life in 2 easy steps 1)Check your email and 2) check your blogs! Sounds WONDERFUL to me!! =)

Here’s how to make it happen (Thanks Micah for your helpful tips!):

1.Sign up for Google Reader

To sign up click here. For this to work, you need to have a google account. I’m also a recent convert to gmail – it’s great!! If you’re in any way unhappy with you current email service, I highly recommend Gmail. If you’d like to know some of the benefits of gmail, you can find out here, or click here to activate your own account.

AddSubscriptions[1]

After signing into Google Reader, click the “Add Subscriptions” bar on the left, and select browse. This will allow you to enter my blog (www.alongsidesarah.wordpress.com) and all of the other blogs that you visit! The blogs web address (like mine above) acts like an email address, updating you on who has recently posted something. There are also many other fun tools that Google Reader has for our convenience!

2. But I want everything in one place!!!

If you’ve signed up for Google Reader, in order for you to know a blog has been updated, it requires you to actually visit the site. Something that gets easy to forget about….. Combined with Google Reader this next step makes life even simplier: GOOGLE PERSONALIZED HOME PAGE.

Here’s a view of a Google Personalized homepage:

With the Google Personalized Home Page, everytime you visit google, not only will it have the search engine, but also a list of the blogs that have just been just updated! It also has many other fun and convient tools for you access like the local weather, the news, your calender, fun word’s of the day and the list goes on!

If you’d like to get a Personalized Google Home Page, here’s how to do it! Trust me! If I can figure it out, SO CAN YOU!!

  1. Visit google and on the top right hand corner click on the “iGoogle” link.
  2. Sign into your google account (Gmail)
  3. Next, you can start customizing your igoogle page by adding the fun things you want and getting rid of the others
  4. Click the “add stuff” link on the right to find even helpful tools
  5. After selecting “add stuff”, do a search for “Google Reader”. It should be at the top of the list on the left of your screen. Once you’ve found it, click “Add it now”
  6. After doing this, click the “Back to homepage” link at the top of the page. The “Google Reader” should now be on your personalized homepage!!

YAY!!! You did it!! =)
